Description

Codenames is a fast-paced, team-based word association game that challenges players to think creatively while communicating carefully. Each team knows which of the 25 cards on the table belong to them, based on a hidden Key Card. One player from each team acts as the Clue Giver, offering a single word connected to several of their team’s cards, along with a number indicating how many cards relate to that clue. Teammates then work together to guess the correct cards — all while avoiding the opposing team’s cards and, most importantly, the dreaded Assassin card, which results in an immediate loss if guessed. With 200 Code Name Cards, 40 Key Cards, team tiles, and a rulebook included, Codenames offers endless replayability for 2 to 8+ players aged 12 and up, with each game lasting around 15 minutes.

How to Play

1. Setup – Lay out 25 Code Name Cards in a 5×5 grid on the table. Place a Key Card in the stand, visible only to the Clue Givers of each team.
2. Identify Teams – The Key Card reveals which cards belong to the Blue team, the Red team, which are Neutral, and which one is the Assassin.
3. Give a Clue – The Clue Giver for the starting team gives one word connected to several of their team’s cards, along with a number (e.g., “FROZEN: 3”).
4. Guess the Cards – Teammates discuss and select cards they believe match the clue, aiming to identify only their own team’s cards.
5. Continue or Stop Guessing – Teams may keep guessing up to the stated number (plus one extra), or choose to stop early if unsure.
6. Avoid Costly Mistakes – Selecting an opposing team’s card ends the turn early; selecting the Assassin card ends the game immediately with a loss for that team.
7. Alternate Turns – Play passes between teams, each giving clues and guessing in turn.
8. Win the Game – The first team to correctly identify all of their own cards wins the game.
